Its smooth surface and carefully finished details are designed for use during mandala offering practice.

In Tibetan Buddhism, a mandala represents the universe. During the mandala offering ritual, practitioners symbolically offer the entire universe while reciting offering prayers. Rings may be stacked and filled with rice and precious objects. Mount Meru, the central axis of the Buddhist cosmos, is represented at the center.
